“ Pursuit of Happiness”

     Thomas Jefferson stated on the Declaration of Independence about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. How did he know that? Christopher Gardner met his father for the first time when he was 28 years old. He made up his mind that when he had children, his children were going to know who their father was. Chris spent his entire life savings on Bone Density Scanners which at the time they came out were considered a revolutionary machine. What Chris did not know was that doctors and hospitals would consider them unnecessary luxuries. If he lost one it was like losing a month’s groceries. He then landed a spot in the Dean Witter Reynolds unpaid training program. He was starting from scratch to build his client base. He had to make hundreds of cold calls to drum up clients. He had to take a lot of rejection. But in doing so he found clients who later brought him huge commissions, clients for whom the commissions ran over $250,00 per year. He never let himself leave the office until he had made his 200 calls that day. His girlfriend left him and their toddler, Chris Jr. With determination, Chris clung to his goal of financial independence, working hard during the day while spending his nights trying to arrange for child care, food and shelter. When they were lucky enough to find space, they slept at the Glide Memorial Church shelter. On less fortunate days Chris found himself huddled in a locked bathroom at a subway station. While running around trying to hide his state of living from his coworkers at Dean Witter two of his Bone Density Scanners were stolen. Chris pulled through and always came up with a solution when things did not go according to plan which happened a lot. His fear of repeating the way his father treated him as a child with his own son kept him from giving up on everything and everyone. Chris had great values, he was well mannered, and had a good sense of humor. The Dean Witter trainees had a system to follow; The person that brought the most money in after six months were usually hired. They were all given call sheets to sign clients from the bottom to the top. The other trainees stayed till 7:00 p.m., but Chris had his son that he needed to pick up from daycare everyday, he had to do in 6 hours what they do in 9. In order not to waste he wasn't hanging up the phone in between calls. He realized that if he did not hang up the phone he gained another 8 minuets a day. He also did not drink water so that he would not waste any time in the bathroom. But even with all that effort after 2 months he still was not going to have time to work his way up a sheet. So he decided to start from the top with the head honchos and work his way down. Chris did his best to take care of his son; he made sure they had a place to sleep every night, He taught him great values and morals to live by, and he never give up. Chris told his son to never let anyone tell him that he could not do something not even himself. Chris

Comparative Analysis:
Write an essay identifying one difference between Watchmen the graphic novel and Watchmen the film.  From there, explain why it is important to note this difference.  I know this may sound narrow but just remember all the in class work we have done with the tiny cogs of Watchmen.

When citing from the graphic novel, quote the text and then put the chapter and page number in parentheses.  See the below example for reference.

               It was 10:00 a.m, I got out of bed, took a shower, and put my hair up in a sock bun. I had 

wanted at least the top half of me to look decent for the picture I was going to have to take for my 

permit. After finishing getting ready my peer mentor, Charles, arrived to bring me to the DMV.

When we arrived we ended up driving around the parking lot for at least 10 minutes searching for a 

spot. We finally park the car and head inside where we have to wait in line for a ticket, which 

determines when it is your turn to receive help, which did not take too long. When I received my 

ticket Charles and I found a place to sit down, at this point I began to look for things to occupy

myself with. I read the ticket in my hand, though there wasn't much to read on it,the one thing that 

did stand out on that ticket was it said there was at least a 45 minute wait. My eyes widened and my 

jaw dropped as I pointed it out to Charles to which he responded, "Now you have more time to 

study." Which I regretfully declined. I then continued to look for ways to occupy myself; I scrolled

through Facebook, Instagram, and looked at every story on my Snapchat. After realizing that it had 

been almost an hour since I had gotten my ticket I began to rant to Charles about how long it was 

taking. I started to twiddle my thumbs and then proceeded to make beats on my thighs, at that point 

Charles had said, " You might be disturbing others around you," so he put a stop to that. I began

to scroll through Facebook again when I realized how hungry I was and that i had not eaten 

breakfast. So I called my mother to ask her to bring me something to eat. Now this call was highly

unpleasant but unlike my raging mother I managed to keep my cool. However she had put me in a 

very bad mood and not even 10 minutes after the phone call my ticket number is announced. I walk

up to this woman's desk where she asks me to give her my forms of ID, which at the time were my

Social Security Number and my Birth Certificate. I handed her my two forms of ID and she proceeds

make copy's of them while I stand there angry and impatient . Finally she hands me my things back 

and asks for my 30 dollar fee, which I paid in cash, she then has me sit down in a chair for my 

picture. Still angry I sit down and without warning she snaps my picture. Without seeing What I 

looked like knowing I must have looked either very angry or very ugly or even a combination of both, 

the woman directs me to my testing area. It was not a very large room but it works.There were 

computers lined up against three walls, both sides and the back of the room, and a huge 

glass window in the front. There was a camera in every corner of the room to help catch someone in 

the act of cheating. I sat down at the computer closest to the door, at this point my mind was racing 

and I could not focus. I was nervous because I had not studied as much as I should have. I filled out 

everything that needed to be filled out before beginning the test. Finally I start the test, I fly through 

the road signs and what to do and not to do on the road but then I was given questions about fines 

which I then began to guess what the answers might be because I had not studied the fines at all. 

Rushing through the signs i finished the test with about 16 or 17 correct and 5 or 6 incorrect. I had

failed, walking out of that room was the worst part of my experience at the DMV, knowing i had just

wasted 30 dollars because of my lack of studying. I'll be taking some time to actually study before I

go back and try again. For now i will either be walking or taking the city bus.

  

The Presidents Men

1) Bob Woodward had to get the information about the Watergate hotel by hearing it in the news and reading about it in the Washing Post. They got the information about this from a person named Deep Throat.

2) In my opinion i believe that it took too long to get information about anything before the internet. Before the internet, you had to look at the news on television or you had to find a good source and a lot of times you'd find out information late about something that happened the day before. Reporters had to find the best source to get information.

3) Bob Woodward had to be careful when he met with Deep Throat because everyone wanted to know who he was. He kept a pledge to keep Deep Throat a secret because if he didn't for 30 years, then his reporting career would be over.

4) Woodward had to use the information Carl Berstein gave him to find the number and call him.

5) It means that Dahlberg's check that ended up in the account of a Watergate and all that being in the front page led to the discovery of how the Watergate buglers were financed through a money-laundering scheme.

6) Berstein got Mitchell to confirm that he was the one to control any of the secret funds by calling him and talking to him while Mitchell was sleeping.

7) Donald Secretti did campaign of duty tricks and distributed illegal campaign literature.

8) I believe that they need so many people to confirm information because they want to make sure it is correct so they wont loose any people over incorrect information. 

9) I believe they say they "love this country" because they wants to have the judge, important people, and regular citizens on their side if things don't go the way they plan it to.

10) The end result of the work done on Watergate by Woodward and Berstein was that they had all the stories together to make sure they had proof, And they captured the men who broke the law.

First Current Event for Quarter 4

Chess Grandmaster Cheats in Tournament from the bathroom.

    Monday April 13, 2015 Geogian chess grandmaster has been banned from the Dubai Open Chess Tournament after getting caught while he made his way to the toilet to consult his smartphone, which was logged onto a chess analysis app.  Nigalidze's chess opponent, Tigran Petrosian of Armenia, began to get suspicious when Nigalidze kept running to the bathroom. "The Armenian noticed the Georgian was oddly frequenting the toilet after each move during a crucial part of the game." When searched for a device they found nothing on Nigalidze, but when they went to the stall he was sitting in when going to cheat they found a cellphone hidden in the toilet paper. Nigalidze claimed the cellphone wasn't his, but the phone was logged on to a social media network under his account. "They also found his game being analyzed in one of the chess applications." The violation was then reported to the International Chess Federation. The Dubai tournament's chief arbiter, Mahdi Abdul Rahim, said players found guilty of cheating will be suspended for three years from all sanctioned tournaments and up to 15 years for a repeated offense. Nigalidze's resume includes victories in the 2013 and 2014 Georgian Chess Championships. It's not clear how many times he went to the bathroom during those matches.

     A lot of people don't think of the effects cheating can have on them. Once you begin it is like an endless cycle of having to do it again. When you cheat you are not teaching yourself how to do the task at hand but only to get the answers right away. Therefor the next time you go to partake in that activity you still do not know what to do so your brain automatically reverts to your first choice from the last time, to cheat. Let's also not forget the consequences that come with cheating. When and if getting caught cheating there's no turning back. For a while there will be no trust; you may not even get it back, you may not be able to do what you were doing while cheating for a very long time; if you even get to do it again, and people will never look at you the same. There is a saying " Once a cheater, always a cheater." Think twice before you cheat.

1. Why were CBS executives and its journalists so hesitant about questioning Senator McCarthy?
        - CBS executives and its journalists were so hesitant about questioning Senator McCarthy because at the time, journalists were not supposed to go against the government. They could loose their careers. CBS could have been hit with large fines. Stalk holders could have complained and voted out the CEO.

2. What method did Murrow and the other journalists use in the first story against McCarthy? Why did they choose this way to tell their story?
        - Murrow used excerpts from McCarthy's own speeches and proclamations to criticize the Senator and point our episodes where he had contradicted himself. Which evidently contributed to the political downfall of Senator Joseph McCarthy. They chose to tell their story this way because it provoked tens of thousands of letters, telegrams, and phone calls to CBS headquarters, running 15 to 1 in favor.

3. Describe McCarthy's appearance on Murrow's program. In your opinion, was it positive? Negative?
        - McCarthy's rebuttal served only to further decrease his already fading popularity. His appearance was negative. Murrow noted that he had " made no reference to any statements of fact that we made" and contested the personal attack made by "the junior senator from Wisconsin" against himself. Murrow exposed him for the "malicious liar that he was."

4. Why did Murrow's schedule get changed on CBS from a nightly program to Sunday afternoons?
         - Murrow's schedule changed from a nightly program to Sunday afternoons because they wanted more people to be aware and not many people stay up late enough to watch the night show.

5. What does Friendly and Murrow refer to as the " downfall of television?"
         - Friendly and Murrow believe that because they were no longer reporting news and going after the government that it was the "downfall of television."

6. What ended up happening to McCarthy?
         - McCarthy was advised by the U.S. president to keep silent. Soon he died.

7. What was Murrow's speech at the beginning and the end of the film about?
        -  Murrow's speech at the beginning and end of the film is about how journalism has become occupied with presenting only good news and how journalists succumb to escapism, losing touch with the real world.

WORCESTER — Four protesters who blocked traffic in Kelley Square as part of a "Black Lives Matter" protest earlier this year have been summoned to court on charges related to the incident.
The protestors, identified by police as Robert Blackwell Gibbs, 39, of Worcester; Julius R. Jones, 34, of Worcester; Kevin M. Ksen, 48, of Worcester; and Sonya Conner, have each been charged with being a disorderly person and disturbing the peace.
"The summonses were a result of an investigation that's been going on since the incident occurred," Worcester Police Sgt. Kerry F. Hazelhurst said. "Based on the investigation and results, those four were charged."
Approximately 30 to 40 protesters crowded Kelley Square about noon Jan. 19, standing together and blocking traffic while singing a song called "I Can't Breathe," as part of national protests in response to Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City deaths at the hands of police. The protest — which lasted about 4½ minutes — came a few days after several people blocked traffic on Interstate 93 in Medford and Milton for a similar cause on Jan. 15.
Mr. Jones told a reporter on Jan. 19 that he and about two dozen people gathered for 4½ minutes to block the area near an Interstate 290 ramp. The number of minutes blocking the road signified each hour Michael Brown's body lay in the street after a police officer shot him dead in Ferguson, Missouri, in August.
The grand jury's decision last fall not to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson in the death of Mr. Brown in Missouri sparked national outrage. The "I Can't Breathe" movement grew a few weeks later, as news circulated of Eric Garner's death in Staten Island after an officer pinned him down in a chokehold. Mr. Garner was recorded on video telling officers 11 times before he died that he couldn't breathe.
Actor Samuel L. Jackson took to social media around that time to share a chant-like song for protesters to sing titled "I Can't Breathe." The lyrics include the line, "Calling out the violence of the racist police, we ain't gonna stop 'til people are free," which Kelley Square protesters sang during the Jan. 19 protest.
In a video of the Kelley Square demonstration posted on YouTube by the Future Focus Media Coop, some motorists honked their horns and seemed agitated as protesters held hands to form a human chain that spanned Route 122A outside the Hotel Vernon. At one point, the protesters parted to allow an ambulance, with its emergency lights on, to pass through the intersection. Then they resumed their positions blocking traffic.
Mr. Blackwell Gibbs was depicted in the video jumping up on a honking truck's cab when the driver pulled close to protesters and blared his horn. Mr. Blackwell Gibbs was seen screaming at the man. Then he jumped off the vehicle and walked away.
When reached for comment about the summonses today, Mr. Blackwell Gibbs wrote in a Facebook message to a reporter, “It is actually … an attempt by the city government and the police to repress the protest movement in this city, therefore silencing the people."
         
                                   I  do agree that you should stand up for what you believe in, but in a legal way jumping up on peoples cars and screaming at them is just the wrong way to go about it. That would probably attract more negative attention than positive which when you're trying to protest that is not what you want. You want as many people on your side as possible. The act also took place in one of the most retarded places i mean really Kelly Square is already complicated enough, it still works out though there doesn't need to be anything in the way of ongoing traffic. Maybe on the sidewalk it be safer  for everyone and they had a huge sign i don't think people will miss it. So if you are thinking about raising awareness of a problem be safe and try not to break the law.

WORCESTER - Appearing on a panel before a legislative proponent of marijuana legalization, top prosecutors on Wednesday made impassioned appeals against loosening restrictions on the substance.

"We ought to turn ourselves into Denver, Colorado, where gummy bears are littering the streets that are made of marijuana?" asked Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe.
O'Keefe suggested inviting to Massachusetts law enforcement officials from Washington and Colorado, states where the drug can be bought and used legally, to help educate the public and policymakers.

Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan said today's marijuana is so powerful it is defined as hashish, and he said youthful drug and alcohol use leads to future criminality.

Sitting across from the panel of top prosecutors at a budget hearing at Quinsigamond Community College was Sen. Will Brownsberger, a Belmont Democrat and a supporter of marijuana legalization.

"So based on that line of argument, should we turn the clock back and prohibit alcohol?" Brownsberger asked.

"We are living with alcohol and its effects on society and they're not particularly good, but why would we want to compound that with respect to marijuana?" asked O'Keefe.

Berkshires District Attorney David Capeless said raising the drinking age would "make sense," but would be "near impossible."

Massachusetts voters decriminalized possession of up to an ounce of marijuana in 2008, legalized medical marijuana in 2012 and could determine whether to fully legalize the drug in 2016.

Brownsberger criticized the current laws, which criminalize minors possessing alcohol but not marijuana.

"Certainly we should fix that, right?" Brownsberger said, calling the situation "the worst of both worlds."

Sullivan said he believes possession of alcohol as a minor should also be decriminalized and said no one wants young people to receive a criminal record for "having a Budweiser."

Another prosecutor indicated he did not agree with Sullivan.

Sen. Michael Moore, a Millbury Democrat, encouraged O'Keefe to "come out with the same passion" if marijuana legalization is on the ballot, and O'Keefe said lawmakers and others should help spread the word about marijuana's dangers.

"What kind of message are we sending to kids when the adult community, the responsible people, give the imprimatur that this drug is not a serious drug?" O'Keefe said, contrasting the recent relaxation of marijuana laws with the widespread concern about opioid addictions and overdoses.

Gov. Charlie Baker, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Attorney General Maura Healey have all recently expressed their opposition to full marijuana legalization.

        Everyone has an opinion on everything different people grew up with different morals and were taught different things. Legalizing marijuana is a very big thing right now there are some studies saying it's not good for you and many others saying it is. Personally I believe that marijuana is not only natural, unlike prescription pills that are filled with chemicals that could cause long term or even permanent effects, that it has many good uses to it. It helps people who have A.D.H.D., depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain from any kind of injury and so much more. Tommy Chong used marijuana oils to cure his cancer and he is now 99% cancer free! Theres also another story I read about where a father gave his daughter with cancer a controlled amount of marijuana and though he was arrested for it because she was a minor it worked. Hemp can also be used to make cloth. I think that the government has been trying to prevent the use of marijuana for so long because of the fact that it is so useful, it could solve so many problems and even save money, but it is all about power,"There is more money to be made in treating a disease than curing it, why cure someone of cancer in a day when we can bill them for a lifetime", I heard this on family guy but it do belive that it is a true statement though I disagree with it very much. Though I do believe it should be legal I do also believe there should be an age restriction. If it is used for say helping cure a childs cancer I agree children should be able to use it as long as it is controlled and only distributed by a parent or guardian.

current event 2 for third quarter

WORCESTER -- A man armed with a gun was apparently more interested in the cash than the sandwich he just ordered inside a Subway sandwich shop Wednesday night on Stafford Street.

Police are now looking for the robber, who they said went into the store at 120 Stafford St. around 9:30 p.m. and ordered something to eat.

"The suspect then went into the bathroom and came out brandishing a semi-automatic handgun," police said. "He demanded money from the clerk and jumped over the counter. The suspect proceeded to take the cash out of the register and place it in his pockets."

No one inside the sub shop was injured. The suspect ran off toward Webster Square.

Police described the suspect as a white male, possibly in his mid-20s, standing about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a large build. The man wore a blue hooded-sweatshirt, baseball hat, a bandana over his face, jeans and black sneakers.

            Too many people are committing crimes because of many different reasons. Though they could be seeking help. There are many organizations out there designed to help people in need. If you are homeless, or on the verge of becoming homeless, if you are jobless, if your family is dysfunctional and many more. There is no reason these people can't be helped, but many may not know that and a lot of them aren't willing to seek out the help. so they resort to committing criminal acts. I think we should promote help to people who need it more often and help people in need more. If you find the man who committed this crime the numbers to reach authority are in the story above.

current event 1 for third quarter

   A quarrel at a large party in Worcester led to a shooting that left one man dead and one woman injured early Sunday morning, police said. Police went to an apartment on Narragansett Avenue about 5 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a problem at a large party, according to a statement. At the scene, which was covered in empty beer bottles, police learned that multiple gunshots had been heard coming from inside the apartment and that a 28-year-old woman had recently arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound.Police entered the apartment through a door that had been left ajar and found Christian Omar Puello-Rosado, 27, of Worcester, on the floor with a gunshot wound. Puello-Rosado was pronounced dead at 5:18 a.m., police said. No one else was found inside the apartment. Police said the female victim was uncooperative with the investigation, but witnesses said Puello-Rosado and an unknown person or persons had a quarrel at the party, during which someone fired a gun, striking Puello-Rosado and the female victim. A friend quickly pulled the injured woman from the apartment and took her to the hospital. Everyone else at the party fled. 
    March 22-23 this took place not too far from my house. The woman who was shot was brought to the hospital I live behind, her car was left in my driveway! Besides the fact that i was awoken at 5:30 in the morning because of the police investigating the car, i think it is upsetting how much crime is committed in Worcester and it has a very different effect on your life when the crime takes place near you or your family. Me being nosy listened to everything the police said outside of my house though at times when I could not make out what they said the story got very confusing so much that i thought the woman had been killed and dumped on my lawn near my tree. That was not the case though. Although I did hear that the person who brought the young woman to the hospital left shortly after bringing her.
    It's scary to think how close all this is to the people that we care about. That could have been you or your family. Hopefully some day we can do something about all of this gun violence and just stick to hunting animals, let the army worry about shooting people.
